A deciduous spreading shrub that blooms in a striking abundance of red, apple blossom-like flowers that precede leaves each spring. Produces yellow-green fruit that usually ripens in early fall. Fruit can be bitter and is often used to make jellies and spreads. Best used in shrub borders.
Outdoor planted care: Open plastic sleeve around nursery container and cover back up with burlap sleeve. Suitable for Zones 5-9. Plant in full sun and water weekly; more often in extreme heat. Plant outside in the ground or in a large container within a couple weeks of receiving. Keep well-watered until planted. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring. For a formal appearance, shear annually after flowering.
