Where We've Been: Summer in Maine

As soon as we saw the snapshots from our photographer Katie H.'s trip to Maine, we were ready to plan our own New England getaway! Katie recently enjoyed a long weekend on the coast near Portland, complete with sunny hikes and samples of local specialties. She says, "My boyfriend Kevin and I have always been adventurers. One weekend, we spontaneously decided to drive up to Maine. We traveled overnight and were greeted by a completely new place in the morning."

Avid hikers, Kevin and Katie spent part their trip exploring Cape Elizabeth, home of the Portland Head Lighthouse. Katie says, "Cape Elizabeth was one of our favorite places. We felt so small as we climbed the cliffs overlooking Casco Bay. The rocky coast is dotted with tall evergreens and birch trees, and the summer air is so crisp and refreshing-- perfect for your favorite, cozy sweatshirt in the evening! After our hike, we ate at a cute food truck called "Bite into Maine," which came highly recommended by the locals. We brought along a blanket and watched the sailboats float by as we enjoyed our lobster rolls."

Katie's trip also included a visit to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, located just outside of Portland. She says, "I loved how the area offers a perfect mixture of city, forest, and sea. Our trip also included stops at quite a few cafes in the area. Tandem Coffee Roasters was a favorite thanks to their in-house bakery and gorgeous, light-filled space. We also indulged in some treats at DuckFat, a tiny and incredibly popular cafe known for its fried poutine, topped with locally-sourced cheese curd, duck gravy, and chives. They also had amazing milkshakes and homemade sodas!"

Katie adds, "The weekend was a great change of pace compared to the hustle and bustle of Philadelphia. I can't wait to visit again!"
