Homemade Summer Beauty

Now that summer has arrived, we’re soaking up sun-filled days poolside and at the beach. Our resident health and beauty expert, Nicolisa W., takes a holistic approach when it comes to having fun in the sun. One of her go-to resources, Homemade Beauty, offers simple, all-natural recipes from Brooklyn makeup artist and natural beauty expert Annie Strole. Recently, Nicolisa shared two of her favorite after-sun remedies to whip up at the end of a summer day. With just three ingredients each, these treatments are equal parts easy and refreshing.

“I love the After-Sun Aloe Treatment recipe from Homemade Beauty,” says Nicolisa. “Aloe vera has tissue regenerating properties and is also an anti-inflammatory. The recipe combines healing cucumber and soothing aloe, so it’s perfect for when you get a bit too much sun.” She adds, “I also swear by the Cucumber-Olive Oil After Pool Hair Revitalizer to freshen my hair after a swim. Olive oil is antioxidant, which pairs with the cucumber to help strip away chlorine residue and condition the hair follicles.” Read on for these summer remedy recipes.

After-Sun Aloe Treatment
1/4 cup aloe vera gel
1 cucumber, peeled and diced
20 drops lavender essential oil

Place aloe vera gel and cucumber in a blender, and blend until smooth. Stir in lavender essential oil. Massage in affected areas. Rinsing is optional.

Cucumber-Olive Oil After Pool Hair Revitalizer
1/2 cucumber, peeled and chopped
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons distilled water

Blend ingredients in a food processor or blender on low to medium speed until smooth. Apply to hair right after the pool, and let sit for at least 10 minutes. Rinse, and follow with shampoo and conditioner.
