Design by Terrain: Trough Centerpieces for Summer
Outdoor entertaining season is upon us which means we’re getting inspired to set our tables with impactful, seasonal centerpieces that celebrate the botanical bounty summer brings. Deb Herbertson from our Design by Terrain team recently planted up this Habit + Form trough with a stunning mix of florals and foliage that’ll last through the summer. Read on to learn about Deb’s design process, where she sees this centerpiece living, and how to care for a similar planting at home.
“I wanted this centerpiece to reflect a mood of fun and romance. Pretty, but with a little edge. Sophisticated but not contrived,” Deb says. “Plant choice is always most important when creating a mood. I knew I was going to use some blooming flowers, but the key to this design is the contrast in foliage. The lacey silver artemisia feels a bit more exotic when paired with black mondo grass and the fabulous dark euphorbia. The classic apricot begonias add some softness, while the chocolate cosmos provide that wonderful lyrical movement. And the little touch of Irish moss planted around the edges adds an unexpected pop of bright green,” she explains.
“I also loved thinking how great this color combination would look in the evenings, since grays and silvers are made for the moonlight! It’s always fun to mix plants that have different leaf shapes and sizes. I like to let plants do their natural dance—the twirl of the black cosmos and the delicate twist of the silver mound are what create the lovely movement in this piece.”
“This trough would be happiest outside in some indirect light. It’s the perfect summer centerpiece for your long teak table. Keeping the soil moist will ensure a summer full of beautifully decorated dinner parties!”
