Design by Terrain: A Gorgeous Green Pot Trio

Weekends, ice cream scoops, and our stoneware drop pots—just a few summer standards that are better in threes. Case in point, this gorgeous trio that Deb Herbertson from our Design by Terrain team recently planted for us in Westport. We chatted with her about the inspiration behind the design, for tips on how to best create a group planting, and how using color in an understated way can make a big impact.

“Green is Mother Nature’s ‘little black dress’, so almost anything looks great in these pots,” Deb says. With that in mind, she says she decided to stay somewhat monochromatic in her design choices, “letting texture and interesting silhouettes add the drama.” She went on to explain, “I loved the idea of starting with some of nature’s dark beauties like the ruby snow, dark sweet potato vine, and the wonderful leaves of the apricot dahlia. Silver is always an interesting foil to dark leaves, so the artemisia was the perfect choice. I wanted to include as many shades of green as I could, so I added the hot pop of bright creeping jenny and the bright shock of green ivy. The tall stuttgart canna and the craspedia add some interesting height and the grasses add that wonderful movement. In monochromatic plantings like these, I love using white as the accent color. Here the little daisy adds some romance and my favorite, the diamond frost euphorbia, is always a winner."

“I think the best way to design with a ‘family’ of containers is to start with one container that comes in several shapes and sizes. I also like to work in odd numbers, so a group of three planters works in almost every situation. When you are planting a trio, the results are usually more interesting if you choose a unifying design or color scheme. You don’t want each planter to be identical but you want them to have a cohesive design. Repetition can also be helpful, using one or two of the same plants in all three planters can instantly bind your design together.”
