Behind the Bouquet: The Bouqs Co. for Terrain Mother's Day Bouquet

Mother’s Day is fast approaching and this year we’ve partnered with The Bouqs Co. to design an exclusive bouquet that’s abundant with sustainably farmed flowers in peachy hues, lush greens, and brilliant blues. Freshly picked from farms in California, the bouquet is wild, natural, and artfully arranged—perfect for all the mothers (and mother figures!) in your life. We recently chatted with Melissa Lowrie and Lora Pietrangelo from our green goods team to tell us about the inspiration behind the design, their favorite blooms in the bouquet, and how they came up with the fresh color palette.

terrain: What a gorgeous bouquet! Can you tell us a bit about the design process for this one?

Melissa: We start with a mood board to find the color story and some inspiration images to speak to the general feel of the bouquet. We’re always thinking about height, texture, dimension, color, and shape. The color story tends to be what we respond to first, while the texture and balance usually informs the overall shape. We lean toward a form that is a bit wild and garden inspired, and usually try to incorporate something fragrant– this year, it’s the sweet clove-scented peach stock.

terrain: Speaking of the color story, this one feels so fresh and new. How did you decide on it?

Melissa: I’m loving all the muted peaches, washed jades, and cornflower blues that are showing up in fashion this spring–it feels very true to a garden aesthetic and feels nostalgic, which is perfect for our philosophy at terrain and for Mother’s Day in general. So many of us learned gardening from a parent, spending hours in the garden, planting and picking blooms. The bouquet, for me, should always feel something like that–gathered and wistful, sweet but not overwrought.

terrain: We love the blooms you chose for this bouquet. Can you walk us through some of the favorites?

Lora: The flouncy butterfly ranunculus give a soft, wildflower feel with lots of character. Each of the flower petals develops a thin layer of wax, which gives them a beautiful sparkle. The silvery blue lambs ear and silver dollar eucalyptus offer accents of texture and movement. But the icing on top is the soft blue delphiniums, the perfect pop of color to complement the soft pink, peach, and ivory tones of the roses.
