A Garden Wedding at Terrain
Along with flowers in bloom and the return of sunshine, one of the most-anticipated elements of spring at terrain is the arrival of wedding season. This year, as we prepared the garden for a summer of celebrations, we looked back at some of our favorite recent weddings and caught up with one bride, Philly photographer Courtney Apple, to hear the story of her special day.
terrain: First, can you tell us a little about you and your husband?
Courtney: Bill and I are complete opposites—he’s fearless and incredibly spontaneous, while I’m much more practical, and grounded—but the contrast works for us and we have been together for over eight years.
I’m a photographer, but Bill and I also own an all-natural beauty brand called Hand in Hand Soap. For each product we sell, we donate a bar of soap to help save children from water-related illness in the developing world. So far, we’ve donated over 65,000 bars of soap in Haiti! Owning a business together isn’t easy, but it has made our bond stronger. Being able to do what we love with one another is something we’re grateful for every day.
terrain: How did you decide on terrain as your wedding location?
Courtney: I had done a few photo shoots at terrain and fell head-over-heels in love, so when I discovered that you did weddings, I knew immediately where I wanted to get married! Most of the time, wedding venues are cheesy and don’t reflect your personal taste, but terrain felt so beautiful and rustic.
terrain: Your lovely photos say a lot, but can you tell us a little more about your wedding day? What was your style inspiration?
Courtney: We had an evening wedding in August. I wanted all neutrals as our theme, and the natural elements of Styer’s were a perfect pairing. The venue itself was our inspiration, which allowed us to really compliment the space with our décor. I worked closely with my mom and terrain’s event coordinator, Liz, to create our décor, and I was just blown away when I saw it all come together.
terrain: What were some of your favorite moments from the day?
Courtney: The best moment of the day was my first peek into the event space as I got ready to walk down the aisle. Preparing for the wedding was definitely nerve-wracking, and it didn’t really sink in that we were getting married until I saw the space and everyone we care about gathered inside. I burst into tears when I realized that this was, in fact, our wedding day!
I also loved how many personal touches we were able to include. My mom, mother-in-law, and some close friends baked all the desserts for us. The dessert table felt so beautiful and personal. We also gave Hand in Hand soaps as favors, and we really loved sharing that connection with our friends.
